TV ratings signal growth in college women’s basketballWhile Clark is enticing viewers, women’s college basketball is experiencing growth that can’t only be explained by “Clarkonomics”– as basketball analyst Debbie Antonelli called it – alone. The surge in women’s college basketball is also due to more investment in media coverage of women’s sports, said Lewis. College women’s basketball players are among the biggest players in the market for Name, Image and Likeness sponsorships. One factor driving the speculation that Clark might stay in college was that WNBA doesn’t have the same platform as women’s college basketball.

CNN —Donald Trump’s leadership PAC paid out more than $2.9 million to law firms last month as his legal troubles mounted and racked up an additional $1.9 million in unpaid legal bills at the end of January, according to a filing Tuesday night with federal regulators. Save America, a political action committee seeded with money Trump raised after his 2020 loss, has been the primary vehicle for underwriting legal bills for Trump and some witnesses in the cases surrounding him. Last year alone, Save America spent more than $55 million on legal bills, accounting for nearly 85% of its spending. Trump’s political operation has directed 10% of the money it raises online from his political supporters to Save America. “It is a form of Navalny, it is a form of communism or fascism,” Trump said.

Three of the stars playing in this weekend’s Super Bowl — San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey, quarterback Brock Purdy and Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes — have dominated jersey sales throughout the NFL season. Mahomes’ jersey sales had a strong start this season, following his 2022 NFL and Super Bowl MVP awards. But while punching a ticket to the Super Bowl helps sell jerseys, it’s not the only thing that drove jersey sales. But over the course of the entire season, Travis Kelce’s brother Jason and his Philadelphia Eagles teammate Jalen Hurts’ jerseys consistently ranked higher in jersey sales. Following that first appearance, he ranked in the top 10 jersey sales another six times in the latter half of the season.

Many housing advocates are also disappointed that Newsom vetoed a bill — AB 309 — to create "social housing" on government-owned land. Resnikoff, whose organization endorsed the effort, noted that the state's current fiscal conditions make it very hard to pass housing policy that requires funding. Advocates are quick to point out that California housing policy has impacts far beyond its borders. How effectively California deals with its housing affordability issues also directly impacts other states' housing markets. The migration of California residents to places from Texas to Oregon has put additional pressure on those states to provide even more housing.

Eyes on the SenateCalifornia hosts a high-profile 2024 Senate race, as a crowded field vies to succeed the late Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein. Porter’s report showed her campaign collected $3.4 million and had amassed nearly $12 million in cash on hand by September 30. One of Sinema’s top challengers, Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego, had a strong fundraising quarter by contrast. And in Pennsylvania, Democratic Sen. Bob Casey raised $3.2 million and had nearly $7.4 million on hand for another top race. CNN —For any Republican presidential candidate not named Donald Trump, making the first primary debate on August 23 in Milwaukee is an essential obstacle to overcome. The Republican National Committee set minimum viability requirements that numerous candidates are having trouble meeting. But the FEC – which is evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans – often struggles to agree on enforcement actions. But that perhaps is not surprising – given how large Trump, his former boss-turned-nemesis, looms over the hard-core Republican base. How is Trump making money these days?

CNN —Mass shootings, like the ones that occurred Monday in Philadelphia and Fort Worth, Texas – and over the weekend in Baltimore — are not uncommon around the Fourth of July. The holiday has accounted for the most mass shootings of any other days of the year in nearly a decade, according to a CNN analysis of the Gun Violence Archive’s mass shooting data since 2014. So far, there have been at least 10 mass shootings on July 4 and 5, according to GVA. Summer days overall have higher numbers of mass shootings than other times of the year, according to CNN’s analysis. Of the top 10 calendar days with the highest number of mass shootings since 2014, all but one — New Year’s Day — was in June, July or August.

The overall fertility rate was 56.1 births per 1,000 women ages 15-44, holding relatively steady from the rate of 56.3 in 2021. After a sharp drop in 2020, birth rates rose in 2021 — the first increase since 2014 — but the numbers still reflect a decline that began before the pandemic. When people have their first child later, they tend to have fewer children overall, Levine explained. Birth rates among women in their late 30s and early 40s rose in the last decade, and the birth rate among women over 45 also exceeded one birth per 1,000 population for the first time in more than a decade. Meanwhile, the teen birth rate dropped to a record low in 2022.

HONG KONG, May 29 (Reuters) - A Hong Kong Court on Monday rejected an application to terminate a landmark national security trial against media tycoon Jimmy Lai, a case that could see him spend the rest of his life in prison if convicted. Jimmy Lai, 75, is the founder of now shut pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily and one of the most prominent Hong Kong critics of China's Communist Party leadership, including President Xi Jinping. Lai and his three companies, Apple Daily Limited, Apple Daily Printing Limited, AD Internet Limited faced a total of three charges under the national security law, including collusion with foreign forces. Beijing imposed the national security law on Hong Kong in 2020 after months of anti-government protests. The security law gives the power of the Chief Executive to select a panel of judges who can hear national security cases.

The rest are spread among other home goods and retail categories, the largest being kitchen and home decor. Smaller categories included pet supplies, which had separate sections for bird supplies and pet furniture covers. The in-person store even has an entire section dedicated to “As Seen on TV” gadgets for the infomercials devotees, like ShamWow! As the company begins closing its remaining 360 Bed Bath & Beyond stores and the coupons expire, there will be deep-discount sales to get the remaining items off shelves. The silver lining: you may be able to finally get that 11-foot solar-powered cantilever patio umbrella or waterproof backseat pet hammock at a low, low price.
CNN —Tupperware may be on the verge of collapse, but the 77-year-old business’ potential demise isn’t necessarily a harbinger of worsening economic conditions. Some business experts say that’s because Tupperware has failed to adapt to changing consumer behaviors. The Tupperware brand name is so iconic that it’s become shorthand for all food leftover storage. That might be part of the problem, as other brands have emerged to compete against Tupperware, sometimes at lower price points. Tupperware has historically only sold to consumers through “direct sales,” most commonly at “Tupperware parties.” These parties were gatherings where people who enjoyed the product would demo and sell the Tupperware brand to their friends and acquaintances.
CNN —One day, seven mass shootings. Before this weekend, the most mass shootings on any day this year was New Year’s Day, which saw six mass shootings, according to GVA. But seven mass shootings in one day is not the highest this country has seen in recent years. In 2020, the 15 mass shootings that occurred across 13 states on July 5 made for the highest number of mass shootings in one day since 2013, according to GVA. There have been more mass shootings than days so far this year and more shootings than at this point in any year since at least 2013.
CNN —It has almost never been as hard to buy a new or used car in the United States as it is today, despite improving supply issues and inflation beginning to steady. But used cars have a long way to go before approaching 2019 sales prices and new car prices have yet to slow down. What makes the 2020s unique is how much car prices rose in a short period of time. Over the used car market’s worst 12 months of the pandemic, the index rose 45%. There’s never been a 12-month period since the BLS began keeping records in 1947 when used car prices have inflated more.
HONG KONG, Feb 6 (Reuters) - Sixteen Hong Kong pro-democracy figures face trial on Monday, more than two years after their arrest, in what some observers say is a landmark case for the city's judicial independence under a national security law imposed by Beijing. Thirteen of those arrested were granted bail in 2021, while the other 34 - including 10 who pleaded not guilty - have been in pre-trial custody on national security grounds. Western governments have criticised the 2020 national security law as a tool to crush dissent in the former British colony. The 31 who pleaded guilty, including former law professor Benny Tai and activist Joshua Wong, will be sentenced after the trial. The case will be heard by three High Court judges designated under the national security law: Andrew Chan, Alex Lee and Johnny Chan.
Lawmakers and advocates are pushing to pass wealth taxes in eight states, after a federal plan failed to pass. The taxes would target both realized and unrealized capital gains, assets like stocks and bonds. "Funding our future means using the revenue generated from the Washington state wealth tax to expand access to affordable homes for working Washingtonians," Frame said. In California, a wealth tax on the unrealized capital gains of the top 0.1% would yield nearly $22 billion, according to California assembly member Alex Lee. Targeting capital gains and unrealized gains are not a new idea, but haven't been able to pick up the federal traction they need to be implemented across the country.
